Grabbing a great cup of coffee in Edinburgh

09/02/2015

In the next part of our series focused on helping you get the most out of the beautiful city that we call home, we’re going to take a look at the best places to grab a good cup of coffee.  Whether you need a pick me up first thing in the morning or need to grab half an hour in the afternoon, these five cafes are all well worth a visit if you’re in the Edinburgh area.

The Elephant House

Perhaps best known as being the coffee house where JK Rowling wrote a lot of the early Harry Potter series, the Elephant House is a very nice place to spend an hour or two.  There’s an enjoyable menu in place covering all of the light lunches and snacks you could want, lovely views of both Edinburgh castle and the graveyard, and – of course – a selection of very delectable coffees.

Clarinda’s Tearoom

If you really enjoy a proper tearoom, then Clarinda’s is definitely worth a visit.  They serve a range of home-baked scones, shortbread and cakes.  It’s a good idea to get there early, as its close proximity to Holyrood Palace means that Clarinda’s can get very busy! As ever, there’s a great selection of coffees and teas on offer at Clarinda’s, so whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll find it there.

The Circle Cafe

The Circle Café serves up delicious fresh and seasonal food at great prices.  The atmosphere is comfortable and informal; it’s a great place for having a quiet chat at lunch or during the afternoon. The Circle has a nice selection of salads and soups as well as a number of teas and coffees.  There is also a takeaway counter should you want to grab something to eat whilst on the move.

Black Medicine

Black Medicine is an almost legendary presence in Edinburgh, and with good reason.  They throw total emphasis on serving up top-notch coffee and delicious fresh food.  There’s also a range of tasty smoothies.  The atmosphere in Black Medicine is classic and welcoming.  Again, you might want to get there early: it gets busy!
